August 2026 was a busy month for our team, with the Dowerin Machinery Field Days being an action-packed two days.
With the cars fully loaded, our team travelled up from Wheatbelt NRM’s office in Northam to Dowerin on the 26th and 27th of August. The two-day event brought together farmers, primary producers, agricultural workers, and their families from across Western Australia, with people travelling from as far as Esperance.
This year, we set up on the football oval, bringing free native trees ready for planting, adorable native animal plushies, with all proceeds going directly to our projects, and the soil corer trailer used for the National Soil Sampling Program.
Community engagement is essential to Wheatbelt NRM, as we are a community-led not-for-profit organisation. Dowerin Machinery Field Days gave our Healthy Environments, Aboriginal NRM, and Sustainable Agriculture project teams an opportunity to chat with the local community about the challenges they are facing and the opportunities they would like to get involved with, including project funding and natural resource management support.
Over the two days, we successfully gave away more than 500 native seedlings, including a range of different species of saltbush, acacia, and melaleuca that are endemic to the region. The engagement and enthusiasm for starting a native garden or adding more trees to the paddock was wonderful to see.
People were interested in learning more about revegetation, fencing, and feral animal control. Wheatbelt NRM’s Eucalypt Woodlands and Protecting Black-Cockatoo projects help protect the Wheatbelt’s native vegetation and wildlife and are fantastic opportunities for landholders interested in conservation.

Even though the second day may have been a little wet and windy, we would like to thank everyone who stopped by the stall and chatted with our team. Whether you learnt something new about natural resource management or took home a couple of native trees, your support for native wildlife is appreciated. Small actions can go a long way.
