National Soil Monitoring Program

CSIRO Soils training day 2025

The National Soil Monitoring Program (NSMP) aims to collect soil samples from 3,000 sites across Australia between 2024-2028 to monitor national soil health indicators and to use the data to help understand soil condition and trends.

As a regional delivery partner for CSIRO, Wheatbelt NRM is responsible for coordinating soil sampling efforts across south-west WA in collaboration with NACC NRM, Perth NRM, PHCC NRM, South West NRM and South Coast NRM and with support from DPIRD.

By collecting over 3,000 soil samples over the next 3 years, the NSMP will allow us to track soil health indicators across Australia to better understand soil condition and long-term trends.

The NSMP data will be used to inform future policy, the National Soil Strategy, and deliver on the Climate Smart Sustainable Agriculture Project Outcomes.

CSIRO have chosen ~450 target sites in the south-west of WA. If you’re located in an agricultural area of south-west WA, you may be contacted by your local NRM to participate in the project. We’d love you to consider being part of it!
