Baronga – traditional totems - a contract to look after country

Aboriginal NRM

WA scientist Dr Stephen Hopper has recently suggested that one way in which we can all commit to caring for our environment is by adopting a Baronga, or Totem to the local Noongar people.

Noongar people consider that you are born into a totem and it requires that spiritual obligations to spirit ancestors be maintained according to the totems that live in the environment.

Dr Hopper has said that if we adopted our own Totem, selected through consultation with local Elders, we were committing to looking after that totem and the surrounding environment.

It could be an effective approach to building environmental protection in our community and expanding the exploration of traditional knowledge in our lives.
