National Soil Monitoring Program hits the ground in the South West
The National Soil Monitoring Program (NSMP) has officially started in the south west of WA with Natural Resource Management officers from across the region now reaching out to landholders to secure sites to be part of the national soil monitoring network.
Supported by funding through the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust (Department of Agriculture. Fisheries and Forestry) in collaboration with CSIRO, the NSMP will generate nationally consistent soil monitoring data from approximately 3000 sites across Australia.
This high-value soil data and information will:
· increase our understanding of soil condition and trends with respect to climate, land use and land management practices
· contribute to information needed to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability.
The field component of the NSMP will be delivered in the south west of WA through a collaboration between the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), CSIRO Australia’s national science agency, the WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) and six regional Natural Resource Management (NRM) organisations.
Landholders will be contacted directly by project officers from their local NRM to discuss participation in the program over the next six months.
