National Soil Monitoring Program underway in the South West
The National Soil Monitoring Program (NSMP) has officially launched in the south west of Western Australia, marking a major step in generating consistent, high-quality soil data across the country. The program will involve the monitoring of around 3,000 sites nationwide, with local engagement now beginning across the region.
Natural Resource Management (NRM) officers across the south west land division are currently reaching out to landholders to secure sites for participation. The data collected will play a key role in:
• Enhancing understanding of soil condition and trends in relation to climate, land use, and management practices.
• Informing strategies to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability.
Collaborative Delivery
The field component of the NSMP will be delivered in the south west of WA through a collaboration between:
• Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF)
• CSIRO
• WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD)
• Six regional Natural Resource Management (NRM) organisations.
Landholders will be contacted directly by project officers from their local NRM to discuss participation in the program over the next six months.
The NSMP is supported by funding from the Australian Government's Natural Heritage Trust and is being delivered in collaboration with CSIRO.
