Natarsha Woods was excited to attend the first meeting of the Soil and Land Conservation Council in many years, and find out just what work they would be taking on.

Focusing on providing expert policy advice to the Minister and the Soil Commissioner, initially in the area of soil health and sustainable agriculture, the Council prepared its initial advice regarding the proposed Soil Health Strategy.

The Council intends to engage with industry and the community to priorities activities.  The attached communique will come out after every meeting to keep the wider community informed.

Being briefed on the Report Card on Sustainable Natural Resource Use in Agriculture and the Auditor-Generals reports of rangelands management and dryland salinity put some perspective on the important of the work of the Council.  “Declining soil health is a major issue for Western Australia, and that is before you consider the extra pressure climate change will put on the ecosystem services of the soil.” Natarsha said.
