Summer Pastures Still Going Strong

A recent trip to visit to our summer pastures trial site at Pingelly has revealed some great green biomass growing, even after three periods of grazing over the summer.

The best biomass producer of the three varieties trialled was the hybrid, summer active grass, Superdan.

The summer growing forage legume – Global Sunn – which was trialled in the same location, appears to have been preferentially grazed possibly due to its higher protein levels. Overall, the Global Sunn’s biomass was very much lower than the Superdan.

The winter wheat that was seeded in October was completely eaten out, with no regrowth.

The trial continues this year and the paddock will be cropped this winter. The effects of growing summer active forage on the winter crop will continue to be assessed throughout the growing season.
