eConnected Grainbelt Demonstration Project

Some 30 growers and agriculture students came together in Northam recently to attend an eConnected Grainbelt Demonstration Project.

The workshop brought together a series of leaders in ag innovation to showcase some of the new possibilities with ag technology and how they can be used to improve the profitability of farm businesses.

John Paul Collins from DAFWA started the day demonstrating the economics behind installing remote cameras on watering points across a farm that allow farmers to monitor troughs without the need to physically visit the sites.

Glen Brayshaw from Planfarm talked the participants through the importance of understanding the water use efficiency of individual cropping programs and provided information on web based programs and apps that can help with these calculations.

Sam Trengrove from the Society of Precision Agriculture Australia (SPAA), highlighted the future of weed sensing for in-crop weed identification to facilitate targeted weed control.

Richard Riddle from Data into Profit talked about how important it is to use data collected on farm or around the locality to make more informed decisions. Better decision making can improve farm profitability and mitigate risks from farm operations.

Ty Henning from Tek Ag ended the session with a lesson in drone technology. Due to strong winds it was unfortunately not possible to demonstrate the drones in flight however it was possible to show video that detailed the valuable contribution to farm management that drones can offer.

The next eConnected event will be held in July and will focus on nitrogen decision making on farm.
