2500 trees for backyard biodiversity

Healthy Environments

This September and October Wheatbelt NRM set up a pop up stall in Bencubbin, Bruce Rock, Hyden, Kondinin, Northam and Wongan Hills. The aim was to provide wildlife attracting native plants to the local community for planting in their gardens. Moorine Rock Primary School also took up the challenge of planting 100 seedlings in the school grounds, as part of the school’s 100-year celebrations.

This third year of running seedling events saw over 180 community members come visit us, learning about what actions we can all do to protect our environment and taking away a selection of plants that will attract birds, bees, butterflies and other native animals in to their backyards.

The plants being given away comprised a range of flowering shrubs, trees and groundcovers that will provide nectar and pollen, as well as nesting and roosting sites for native species. The vegetation will also attract insects that, in turn, attract insectivorous birds to the garden, such as the stunning Crimson Chat or the Splendid Fairy-wren.

Keep an eye on our e-news and facebook page next year, to see if we’re coming to a town near you. If you are involved with a school and are interested in a student planting project please let us know and we can discuss the opportunity.
