Linking NRM and sustainable development at the community scale in the Avon River Basin

CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems

While there has been significant local government participation in natural resource management (NRM) planning and program implementation in the Avon River Basin (ARB), the region's large area and diverse character, with thirty-four local governments, creates significant operational and strategic challenges for local-regional cooperation. In looking to improve outcomes from working with local governments Wheatbelt NRM recognises the need for a more comprehensive analysis to navigate the complex socioeconomic issues in this area.

This document represents particular importance for the local Aboriginal people of the Avon River Basin - the Ballardong Noongar. This aims to represent this close affinity Ballardong Noongars have had with their Country since the time of the Dreaming.

RTK Literature Review

Principal Researcher Sandra Harben BA, Cultural Consultant Leonard Collard MA, MURDOCH PROJECT TEAM

The purpose of this paper is to support the ‘Recording Traditional Knowledge for Natural Resource Management in the Avon River Basin" by providing a rudimentary analysis of literature about traditional Noongar land use and management, including attachment, cultural, physical and spiritual aspects, within the Avon River Basin.

NRM Nyungar Dictionary

Oral McGuire

"We hope this document will make a positive contribution to the ongoing development of Nyungar/Wedjella relations within the Avon Catchment Region. We encourage the use of the language to promote Nyungar engagement in natural resource management and to demonstrate intimate Nyungar knowledge (Katadjin) of their traditional lands (Budjar) and its biodiversity. We want to promote our words, our names and our places across this region and we would like to work with all people to better care for our Budjar. This was the sentiment shared by all Elders who contributed to this work."

Burlong Pool on the Gulgalya Bulya

Wheatbelt NRM

Wheatbelt NRM (formally known as Avon Catchment Council) in association with its partners has installed 12 interpretive signs at Burlong Pool that are reprinted here in this booklet. The site has also undergone a major cleanup and development. This project was a joint initiative involving the local Aboriginal community, Shire of Northam, Avon Valley Environmental Society, Department of Water, Avon Valley Contractors, Green Corps and Wheatbelt NRM.
